There are so many things you can do with Professional Matte Medium besides using it to thin and extend the volume of your acrylic paint.
You can use it:
- to bring down the sheen of an acrylic paint product
- to varnish a painting for a no-glare finish
- to pre-seal journal pages and wood panels
- as a fixative for lightweight materials
- as a collage adhesive
My Favorite Uses
I mostly use this as a collage adhesive in my mixed media work, and I also use it as a clear base that I tint with Golden High Flow Acrylics for different effects.
I sometimes tint it with colored mica pigment powders or Jacquard Pearl-Ex pigments. Depending on the look you want, you may prefer Liquitex Acrylic Gloss Medium as the base for a shiny finish.

Matte Medium Pro Tip
Problem: if you use blue painter’s tape to mask a horizon line or other area, paint can wick under the tape and leave a fuzzy edge.
Resolution: before you paint over the tape, brush a thin layer of matte medium along the tape edge. Let it dry, then paint. You will get a crisp line when you remove the tape.
I Used Matte Medium in This Piece
On the piece below, my first layers were under-painting and magazine collage pieces adhered with Matte Medium.
